The American Cancer Society Now Recommends That Colorectal Cancer Screenings Start at Age 45, Instead of 50
On May 30, 2018, the American Cancer Society updated its colorectal cancer screening guideline for people at average risk. In the new guideline, the American Cancer Society recommends that people at average risk of colorectal cancer start regular screening at age 45, instead of starting at age 50 as recommended in the previous guideline. Why is this important? Colorectal cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer deaths in our country, and it can be detected early through regular screenings. Regular screenings are recommended universally to start at 45 because the risk of colorectal cancer increases with age. Although unpleasant, a colonoscopy could save your life.
